The historic heart of Sorrento

  1. A historic hotel in the heart of Sorrento right above the sea
  2. Three restaurants featuring the finest Neapolitan cuisine
  3. A spectacular sailboat with which to explore the Bay of Naples

The Grand Hotel Cocumella is considered one of the most prestigious hotels in Sorrento, Italy. Its long and illustrious history began in 1822, when the former Jesuit residence dating from the 16th century was transformed into a luxury hotel, which has only expanded and improved over the past two centuries. Famous guests including the Duke of Wellington, Goethe, Murat, and Hans Christian Andersen have stayed here over the years, and international artists and celebrities still continue to choose the Cocumella for their stay on Italy's Coast.

A Garden Overlooking the Bay of Naples

The garden at the Cocumella is the jewel in the hotel's crown, with its Mediterranean flora, citrus orchard, lush flowering plants, bright colors, and tropical scents. It is here where guests love to wander and relax in the soothing quiet until reaching the sweeping terrace over the sea, where they are treated to an unforgettable view of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.

Relaxation Any Way You Like

Pool, sundeck, wellness, tennis, and a magnificent historic garden: at the Cocumella you can relax in any style you prefer. Take some time for sports, treat yourself to a beauty treatment or massage, or simply meander through the garden with its view over the Bay of Naples from the hotel terraces.

Hop on the historic sailboat from 1880 to explore the islands in the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast! Grand Hotel Cocumella offers this unique and unforgettable experience to hotel guests.

Luxury Rooms

Guest rooms at the Grand Hotel Cocumella are perfect jewels, each unique and luxurious. The 60 rooms are carefully decorated and furnished with period pieces and, in some, marble fireplace. Suites include a living area and jetted tub in the bathroom.

Whichever you choose, the menu has been crafted to provide guests with the opportunity to sample authentic Italian cuisine.

Among the best, period!

Absolutely loved it here. No complaints! The service is first rate. The grounds are exquisite, the beach is lovely, and the whole place is a beautiful and historic oasis of serenity. We booked into a base room, communicated in advance that we were traveling with two young children, and they were accommodated into our room without issue. That may not sound like much if you’re used to American hotels, but in Europe being kid-friendly in the hotel industry is the exception, not the rule. We appreciated that the room was spacious (again, vis a vis European standards) had outstanding water pressure by any standard, and had everything we could want. The breakfast buffet is top notch and not to be missed. Freshly squeezed juices, honey dripping from the comb, meats, breads, omelettes, prosecco-you name it. A let’s not forget the outstanding coffee options! Great start to the day! The grounds are expansive with all manner of exotic plants, trees, citrus, and flowers. Not a bad place to hang out with a book, or just stroll around. We used the beach every day. You can either use the chairs out on the platform at the end of the jetty, or you can use chairs on the small black sand beach. Having young kids, we always chose the beach and it was perfect for us. Absolutely beautiful spot with crystal clear blue water. Just thinking about it makes me want to head back! We enjoyed going to La Marinella for lunch, which was super convenient and had beautiful views of the swim area. Speaking of beautiful views, we had a lovely dinner at Coku, with food, music, and views of the sunset over the Gulf of Napoli not to be forgotten. We also enjoyed the pool for an afternoon swim, and we loved the gelato on sale at the pool bar (and the spritzes!) The shuttle to Sorrento was always timely and reliable. Great feature of the hotel. The hustle of Sorrento will make you grateful to return to Cocumella for sure haha. All told this is one of my favorite hotels in the world. Also gotta say Giuseppe at the front desk was great

Old school charm and service

As Hilton Gold member, we stayed at both La Cocumella and the Hilton Sorrento Palace back to back. Both were great for different reasons. La Cocumella is a very personalized experience on a charming, scenic edge of the coast. It’s the kind of property where you get there you don’t want to leave. What stands out is the service. From the front desk to the pool guys, they are welcoming and try to be as flexible as possible. Other reviews have mentioned it being a little outdated - sure that’s true but that’s also part of the charm. Its roots go back to the 17th century so to us the vibe went together. Just don’t expect a modern upgraded feel. The pool and the dock/beach accessed via elevator were great. And the views … spectacular, Especially at night and from the Robata restaurant Coku. With big grounds and just a few rooms, the place feels personalized and not overcrowded even during high season. Best for honeymooners, couples, and those looking to relax with a spectacular view of Sorrento and beach/dock access.

We came to GHC after ten days in Anacapri and Amalfi where we stayed in five star resorts that I thought could not be beat. I was expecting GHC to be my least favorite stop given I knew it was old. Well, this spot really was a delight. Our suite was large and had a two story outdoor area overlooking the resort and water beyond. The staff was top five I’ve ever experienced- they were so so responsive and endearing. The food was all made from the giant garden in the center of the resort which is stunning to walk through en route to the pool and beach. Every corner of the hotel has a surprise and delight. We took the sailboat for a sunset cruise and that was magic, definitely don’t miss that. Every meal was a ten. And it is a small resort, but still big enough that it feels comfortable and quiet. The bar overlooking the water is also amazing. Definitely go and embrace the old world charm. This hotel is right up there with the majors down the coast!

The hotel cocumella was easily one of the best travel experiences we have had as a family. From the moment we walked in the door we were welcomed with open arms and friendly service. By the time we left we were hugging the staff good bye. The food was excellent, the rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable, the temperature was cool, the view (and the entire property) was unbeatable. It is absolutely on the older side of hotels I’m sure, but the things that mattered didn’t feel old. The concierge was incredibly helpful and kind. There was a huge wedding at the hotel when we were there and we could have easily felt pushed aside to serve those guest but instead we still felt like their most important guests. That is pretty special.
