Postcard-perfect memories from Sorrento

  1. From the rooms to the private beach by elevator
  2. Dinner with a view of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples
  3. A historic hotel in the heart of Sorrento

Built on the cliffs directly above the sea, this was the first hotel in Sorrento to give its guests the spectacular view over the Gulf of Naples and Vesuvius. But Grand Hotel Riviera is also a hotel that moves you: with its enchanting private beach, panoramic pool, Mediterranean cuisine and elegant rooms designed for an unforgettable holiday. Part of the Benvenuto Collection.

Old-world charm

With a long history behind it, Grand Hotel Riviera has welcomed illustrious guests and celebrities over the decades, and was among the first hotels in Sorrento to offer direct access to a private beach. The rooms are little jewels of light and Mediterranean style. Twelve categories to choose from: Comfort, Single, Classic, Classic Plus, Superior, Premium, Deluxe, Family Room, Executive, Junior Suite, Suite Vesuvio, Suite Infinity and the Riviera Grand Suite (90 sqm, top floor, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, living room and large panoramic terrace).

Dining with a view

The clifftop terraces seem made for magical moments. Have breakfast facing Vesuvius in the Le Vele dining room, enjoy lunch looking out over the sea, or savour a romantic dinner with the Gulf lights all around at the Blue Lounge Dine & Drinks. Mediterranean flavours take centre stage throughout, from the breakfast buffet with local pastries to a menu of the finest regional specialities.

Not to be missed: an aperitivo at sunset on the Blue Lounge terrace is a must for Riviera guests.

To the beach by elevator

A hotel with a private beach in Sorrento: this too is luxury. And to get there, all you need to do is step out of your room and take the elevator down to the Smeraldo Beach Club. The beach has everything for a perfect day at the sea: sun loungers, parasols, beach towels, snorkelling equipment and the option to hire a boat for a trip along the Sorrentine coast. Or spend the day on the grand terrace by the panoramic pool, an oasis suspended above the sea between palm trees, flowers and blue majolica tiles, with the Corallo Lounge on hand for relaxed moments.

It is a hotel with extraordinary potential that, year after year, continues to improve itself without ever disappointing expectations. The staff is simply exceptional: always smiling, professional, helpful, and attentive to every guest's needs, making you feel truly at home. The food is fantastic, with high-quality dishes, fresh ingredients, and a cuisine that manages to enhance the flavors of the region. The private beach and the pool are two authentic strong points: well-maintained, relaxing, and perfect for enjoying an unforgettable vacation. Coming back here is a guarantee by now. It is one of those places that manage to renew themselves every year while keeping the quality of the service and the special atmosphere that distinguishes it intact. Compliments to the whole team: keep it up! I can't wait to come back.

The location of this hotel is breathtaking, and the staff are professional and extremely friendly. The atmosphere is relaxed yet polished. The bathing platform has a beach bar and access to a safe sea bathing areas. It's a ten-minute flat walk into the centre. We also had some fabulous meals at the hotel restaurant with wonderful service and incredible views over the bay. The sunset around 8pm was truly spectacular! The maitre d' Luigi ensures everything is extra special. Also Teresa at breakfast always greeted us with a smile and our favourite drinks. Also Luigi was great and also helped me to learn a little Italian. Also Angelo, Francisco and Raffaella in the bar were fantastic as we're Mario and Vittonio who worked at the beach bar. The hotel is fabulous but it's the staff who made it extra special for us.

Sorrento capped off our family's two week Italy trip and we were happy that we stayed at the Grand Hotel Riviera. We stayed at 4 and 5 star hotels in Venice, Florence and Rome and while aspects of this hotel are a little dated we were able to look past them. The good: -staff was generally excellent. we felt like a valued guest with the lobby staff always saying hello and asking how our stay was going. -location is great. being right on the coast the view are stunning. It was maybe a 10 minute flat walk to the downtown area, which suited us just fine (btw a taxi is 20 EUR for about a 3 minute ride). -the common areas were all very nicely appointed and updated -the restaurant food and staff were excellent. Throughout our stay we had used it at times for breakfast, lunch and dinner. -pool and ocean area were nice. We liked being able to access either area. While each area got busy at times in the mid to late afternoon we didn't have a problem getting seats together at either. The ocean area was neat with having the protected swimming area along with floats/noodles to use along with pool attendants to help and ice cream available to buy for a few EUR. -it was very hot outside and the AC in the room worked great. The area for improvement: -the room was a little dated compared to the other 4 and 5 star hotel we stayed at in Italy. I expected it so it wasn't an issue for us but still something to call out. We specifically stayed in a family room which had a common area with two individual beds along with a separate bedroom and bathroom. In the bedroom was also the door to connect to another room. What I really didn't like about it is that the door was thin and a single door (not a door in that room and a door in our room that both closed) so we could pretty clearly hear people in the other room as well as light easily came through from their room. The bathroom had very little counterspace which is a challenge for a family of four. Despite what I said above we still really enjoyed our stay and would recommend the hotel to others.

Map

It would be hard to find a better location than that of Grand Hotel Riviera, right above the sea but practically in the center of Sorrento. The charming lanes of the historic center and the port with ferries for day trips to the islands in the Bay of Naples are just steps away. Sorrento is the ideal base for visiting the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii.
