A Fabulous European Hotel

This hotel is fabulous. The rooms are so beautifully done, as is the entire hotel. The staff is friendly, welcoming and helpful. A special thank you to Gaetano who remembered both my mother’s and my drink orders every night and was so helpful in every interaction. I stayed here with my mom for her 65th birthday trip around Italy and it was a great homebase We were able to tour the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento Coast and all around the Bay of Naples. The hotel is very close to the train station and across the street from a lemon grove that will make you never want to leave Sorrento. This hotel truly was so fabulous. The staff was the most friendly of any hotel I’ve stayed in around Europe. Thank you so much for a fabulous stay- especially the man who played the piano and Gaetano at the bar! Housekeeping was also outstanding.

This hotel had everything. Sun roof with pool and stunning views and bar. the sunsets were amazing. The rooms so beautiful and the bathroom had all the little bottles you need for hair, shower, shoes, just like they used to be. Staff very friendly. A lovely buongiorno every morning from Maria the maid as we went to breakfast. Breakfast was a large buffet with everything you would want to start your day. The chef made lovely omelettes. The gardens round the hotel are beautiful. Thank you for a very peaceful stay

Charming, Convenient and Comfortable

Hotel Grande de la Ville is not the most luxurious property in Sorrento but it has a whole lot going for it. Pros: Location: A short easy (no hills) walk to the main Piazza. Although the hotel is not located directly on the water, the seafront can be reached in 5 minutes where there are restaurants and bars for great sunset viewing. The ferry is approximately 25 minutes away if you walk with numerous stairs. The property is also on a relatively quiet street and due to the lemon groves opposite the entrance, the noise level and traffic is greatly reduced. We stayed in a prestige terrace room with beautiful views of the sea and Mount Vesuvius, so we thought the location was wonderful. Rooms: Our room was very nice with comfortable bedding and a good shower with plenty of hot water. Toiletries and a hair dryer are provided. There is a roomy cupboard with plenty of space to hang clothing and store extra items. A safe for valuables can also be found there. The terrace had a table plus very comfortable lounge chairs. Sunsets from the terrace were lovely. Cleanliness: I don’t think I’ve ever stayed at a property that was as clean as this one: really exceptional! Mirrors are a major part of the decor with not a speck of dust. Food: the breakfast buffet was good, not exceptional but offered a good selection of breads, pastries, fruits with an omelette station in a very pleasant light-filled room with efficient servers. Lunch and dinner are served during specific hours, and there is also a bar area that is open during the time the main restaurant is closed. Small snacks, pizza and salads can usually be ordered there. Service and facilities: very good in all respects. There is a spa and fitness center on the lowest floor. Behind the lobby is a lovely quiet garden area and terrace with seating. Cons: dated furniture which is not much of a con because it’s actually rather charming. Interested in transfers and tours? We used Aldo Limousines for 3 transfers and their service is exceptional. Askos has numerous tours and we were very pleased with their professionalism. If you want to do a day trip to Positano and Amalfi, instead of booking an expensive private boat, consider buying tickets for one of the high speed ferries. They’re comfortable and you get great views of the Amalfi coast. The town of Amalfi was a major disappointment: super crowded with little to see in my humble opinion. We walked 10 minutes away to Atrani, tiny but we enjoyed the environment there , and had a fantastic meal at Le Arcate with seaviews. Take the time to tour Pompei and Herculaneum: they’re both worth the effort. Sorrento is so lovely and Hotel Grande de la Ville made a delightful contribution to our overall experience.
